Aireys Inlet, five homes on the coast — some years on
Completed in 2016, the Great Ocean Road project remains a useful test of how coastal detailing holds up.
Five contemporary homes at 76–78 Great Ocean Road were completed in 2016, at a project value of approximately $5.5 million.
Coastal sites are unforgiving. Salt air, exposure and a planning framework that guards the visual character of the Great Ocean Road all narrow the range of acceptable answers. The response was low, horizontal massing that sits under the tree line, natural materials selected for weathering rather than for how they photograph on handover day, and detailing designed around ongoing maintenance access.
Returning to a project years after settlement is the only real audit of a specification. This one continues to inform how we detail exposed elevations on our metropolitan work.
